How to Make Herbal Liniment for Muscle Aches and Sprains

How to Make Herbal Liniment for Muscle Aches and Sprains

Herbal liniments have traditionally been used as a natural means for relieving muscle and joint aches, sprains and bruises. These topical preparations are typically made using warming, stimulating herbs such as cayenne and ginger. Vinegar, oil, rubbing alcohol or a grain alcohol like gin or vodka are usually used as a base.

An alcohol-based liniment enhances the cooling qualities of a liniment, quickly evaporating and leaving the herbal properties to penetrate into the skin. Not only will an oil-based liniment stay on the skin much longer, it will also warm the area.

Things You'll Need:

1 oz. Jojoba or other Carrier Oil

5 drops eucalyptus Essential Oil

5 drops peppermint Essential Oil

3 drops cinnamon Essential Oil

3 drops ginger Essential Oil

Make an Alcohol-Based Herbal Liniment

1

Mix all the herbs together in a jar. Pour in the rubbing alcohol. Seal the jar and place it in a warm, dark area such as a cabinet. Alternatively, place it in a paper bag.

2

Leave the liniment to stand for 7 to 10 days, shaking well at least once each day. Strain out the ground herbs with the cheesecloth. Squeeze the herb material to get out as much of the liquid as possible.

3

Pour the preparation into an airtight container. Label your jar with the warning: "For External Use Only."

4

When you apply your liniment, you can enhance the warming effect by covering the application area with a warmed towel.

Make an oil-based Herbal Liniment

1

Mix all the ingredients together in a jar. Cover and let stand for 3 days.

2

Shake well at least once each day.

3

Store in a cool, dark place.

Tips & Warnings

For increased potency, leave the herbal preparation "set" for up to 8 weeks.

It is always advisable to perform a patch test on your skin before using any herbal treatment. Do this to make sure that you are not allergic to it. Apply a little bit of the herbal liniment to your inner arm or wrist. Leave it on for a day or so to see if there is any reaction such as burning.

How to Make Herbal Compresses

How to Make Herbal Compresses

Herbal compresses are simple to make and have a number of beneficial properties. Warm compresses can be applied to treat arthritis, muscle pain, acne and more while cold compresses help to soothe wounds, eczema, psoriasis or other skin inflammations. With just a few simple tips you can learn to make an herbal compress using any healing herb.

Things You'll Need:

Herbs of your choice

Clean, cotton cloth

Surgical bandage

1

Make a strong tea using your choice of healing herbs. If you are placing the compress on open wounds or irritated skin, it is extremely important that you allow the water to cool to room temperature. Recent injuries, such as muscle tears or black eyes should also be treated with cold tea.

2

Fold a piece of cotton cloth so that it is four layers thick. The size of your cloth will depend on the area to be treated. Make sure that the cloth is clean and that it does not shed fibers, particularly if placing your herbal compress on open or irritated skin.

3

Soak the cloth in your herbal tea and gently wring out any excess water. While you want to cloth to be as damp as possible, you want to remove enough liquid that it does not drip and make a mess.

4

Place the damp cloth on the affected area and then secure with surgical tape. Always use medical tape, as other forms can cling to the skin, damaging delicate tissues upon removal. Wrap the area with a surgical bandage to hold in moisture and heat if using a hot compress and allow the compress to set for at least 30 minutes. The length of time the compress is applied will depend on the treatment and the herb.

How to Make Ginger Infused Honey

How to Make Ginger Infused Honey

I like to find creative ways to take my medicine. Honey and ginger are two of my favorite things to take when I have the flu-- especially if it involves a sore throat, fever or the chills. I know it seems a little strange, but ginger helps lower a fever and also get rid of the chills.

Another thing I love about it is if you buy honey that hasn't been pasteurized, it is rich in enzymes and is good at chasing away those germs. And I often use ginger to help strengthen my immune system.

The problem is, I get tired of drinking ginger tea all the time. So, I keep a good supply of ginger infused honey on hand. You can stir some in plain yogurt, use it in your oatmeal and stir it in your tea. I especially like it when mixed with either chamomile or green tea. Here is how to infuse ginger with honey.

Things You'll Need:

2-inch piece of whole ginger root

Honey, approximately one cup

8 oz. mason jar with a tight lid

1

You can find ginger root at almost any supermarket nowadays. Look for a root that doesn't look shriveled and dried out. Sometimes I see them like that. You want to find one that looks nice and fresh.

2

Cut off a 2-inch piece from the ginger root. Using the edge of a spoon or a paring knife, scrape off the skin. If the root is fresh it should come off really easily.

3

Roughly chop the root and gently crush it with the bottom of a glass or the back of your knife.

4

Place it in a sterilized 8 oz. glass jar (I like to use a mason jar). If you can't find a mason jar, you can use any jar you can find.

5

Pour honey over the ginger root right up to the top. Cover tightly and store in the refrigerator. You can start using it after about 4 days. It will keep for about 2 weeks.

Tips & Warnings

You may want to purchase unpasteurized honey to boost the honey's nutritional value.

If you can find it, organic ginger is always best.

Don't use dried ginger. Fresh is always best.

Don't feed this to infants 2 years or younger.

Always consult with a doctor.

Echinacea, known for its immune system-enhancing capabilities, is especially beneficial during cold and flu season. Echinacea root and flowers are widely available for purchase at health food stores, online at herbalist's and alternative medicine sites and also naturopath practitioners. Growing wild in many locations in the world on roadside verges and fertile wastelands, echinacea stimulates the white blood cells that kill viruses and bacteria, therefore keeping us healthier and free from sickness. Antiviral, antifungal and antibacterial, echinacea is one of the most helpful medicinal herbs to have on hand in your home. Echinacea tincture keeps well in a cool dark place for up to two years.

Things You'll Need:

2 cups of good-quality vodka

2 cups of washed, chopped Echinacea root

Large glass screw-top jar

Pipette

12 1-oz. amber-colored glass dropper bottles

Shrink bands

Hairdryer

1

Dig echinacea roots up with a garden hand-fork making certain not to break the root. Store-bought Echinacea root can be washed, chopped and sorted until you have measured two cups of echinacea root.

2

Measure two cups of 100 proof (50% by volume) good-quality vodka to the two cups of washed and chopped echinacea root and mix together in a large glass screw-top jar.

3

Place jar in a cool dark place away from sunlight and shake daily for six weeks.

4

Strain the liquid from the roots after six weeks of extraction. Pour through two layers of cheesecloth into a sterilized glass jar. Discard the used roots.

5

Use the pipette to transfer fresh echinacea tincture into individual amber-colored dropper bottles. Cap tightly. Place a shrink band on the neck of each amber bottle and use the hairdryer to seal each one in a couple of seconds. This ensures that over time, the tincture is not tampered with in any way. Store bottled tincture in a cool dark cupboard.

Tips & Warnings

If you don't drink alcohol, put the tincture in a hot cup of tea where the alcohol can evaporate, leaving just the tincture in your tea.

As with all items containing alcohol, store tincture away from
babies
and children's reach, preferably under lock and key.

Alcohol is flammable; keep away from open flame.

How to Make Ear Candles

How to Make Ear Candles

Ear candles, or ear cones, are hollow tubes typically made from muslin and beeswax. They are used to soften and extract earwax and remove excess moisture from the ear canal. They also help to alleviate sinus pressure and extricate any debris that has become stuck in the ear canal. Many of the candles also contain herbs such as marjoram and sweetgrass, and essential oils like
lavender
oil and tea tree oil, to add soothing and healing properties to the candles. Follow these steps to make ear candles at home.

Things You'll Need:

Muslin cloth

Beeswax

Wooden dowel

Pencil

Aluminum foil

1

Cut muslin cloth into strips about 3/4 inch wide. Make them a few inches longer than the dowel you are using for a mold on each end. If your dowel is 12-inches long, cut your muslin strips to be between 16- and 18-inches long. You will need one strip for each candle you intend to make. Use only unbleached muslin.

2

Cover the surface of your work station with aluminum foil to protect it from any hot wax drippings and make cleanup easier.

3

Melt beeswax in a saucepan over low heat. You can buy beeswax online or at local craft stores. Plan on using about 4 ounces of wax for each candle, although you may use less depending on the size of your candles. Let the beeswax simmer but do not allow it to boil or become too hot.

4

Place your mold across the top of your saucepan to heat it. Use a wooden dowel for your mold. It should be about three 3/4 inch in diameter and about 10 to 12 inches long. The dowel should be sharpened to a point on one end and then lacquered or oiled to ease the candle off the mold when finished.

5

Drop a strip of the muslin cloth into the wax. Use your mold to slowly submerge the cloth into the wax.

6

Lift cloth out of the wax using your mold. Allow to cool for a moment until the wax is cool enough to handle.

7

Wrap a little of the cloth around the pointed end of the mould to form the candle tip. Pinch it into place and allow to cool for a minute.

8

Continue wrapping the cloth around the mold until it is completely covered with the cloth. Apply pressure as you wrap and shake off any excess wax.

9

Smooth the cloth onto the mold in the same direction you wrapped it.

10

Dip the tip of the candle back into the warm beeswax.

11

Remove the mold from the candle once it is about half way dry. Simply hold the candle with one hand and twist the mold with the other hand to loosen the mold from the candle. Then pull candle off the mold, taking care not to misshape it.

12

Use a sharpened pencil to poke a hole in the tip of the candle and open it.

13

Lay the candle on the foil to finish drying. When dry, hold your hand over the tip and blow in the other end of the candle. If you feel the air on your hand, then the candle was made properly.

How to Use Qigong to Train for Martial Arts

How to Use Qigong to Train for Martial Arts

Qigong (pronounced "chee-gong") is a combination of physical movement, mental focus and breathing techniques. Invented in China long, long ago, Qigong has evolved into a wide-ranging set of practices. Common to all types of Qigong is the idea that focused breathing and exercise directs the energy called "Qi" in the human body to vital areas where it can heal, restore and combat fatigue. Qigong practitioners believe that good Qi also postpones aging and increases longevity. Not only is Qigong used to treat chronic conditions like allergies, asthma or recurrent headaches; it's often used in conjunction with the
martial arts
. Follow these steps to find out how to use it to help your martial arts training.

Things You'll Need:

Instructional materials such as books, audio lessons or videos that explain how to use Qigong exercises to train for martial arts

1

Buy a book, audio cassette or video that will help you learn more about how to use Qigong to train for martial arts. You can also look for a Qigong school that incorporates martial arts. You can begin to learn about Qigong online at the Qigong Center Web site (see Resources below).

2

First practice Qigong basics like breathing and controlled movement. This will help prepare you for the more intense physical demands of martial arts training to follow.

3

Don't forget to stretch. Even though Qigong is low impact and is used to increase flexibility and muscle strength, you should always stretch well before beginning any exercise.

4

Focus on your breathing. Draw in and collect energy during the deep abdominal breathing stressed in Qigong. Strike martial arts blows on your exhale for more precision and power.

5

Open your mind and approach satori, the state where higher-level conscious thought is set aside as the body becomes in tune with its environment. This is where the stress-reducing aspect of Qigong comes into play.

6

Meditate. Before and after your marital arts training, set aside time to clear your mind of cares and concerns. Focus on your breath and feel tension fade away.

7

Remember your Qi, your body's vital energy. It's central to both Qigong and martial arts. Qigong practitioners believe that Qigong directs the body's Qi to important areas to heal and strengthen while the martial arts focus Qi for greater power.

Tips & Warnings

Practice Qigong separately first. Once you've learned how to perform basic Qigong, combine it with your martial arts practice to realize maximum benefit.

Any sudden pain, shortness of breath or dizziness experienced during martial arts practice or Qigong requires immediate attention. See a licensed medical professional or go to the emergency room.

Before you start any alternative medical technique, be aware that many have not been scientifically evaluated. Often, only limited information is available about their safety and effectiveness. Each state and each discipline has its own rules about how alternative medicine practitioners can be professionally licensed. If you decide to visit one, choose one licensed by a recognized national organization. Consult your primary health care provider about your decision first. How to Use Qigong to Increase Energy

How to Use Qigong to Increase Energy

Directing the body's natural energy, or "Qi," in order to increase energy, treat allergies, manage diabetes and increase longevity is what Qigong (pronounced "chee-gong") is all about. It's a very old technique developed in China that's practiced by millions of people around the world each and every day. All across China and in cities large and small across the globe, it's a common sight to see individuals and groups of people practicing Qigong in parks, homes and schools. Follow these steps to join them in using Qigong to increase your everyday energy.

Things You'll Need:

Computer with Internet access to find a Qigong teacher

1

Start by focusing on your breath. It may seem counter-intuitive; but slow, deep relaxed breathing will increase energy levels by increasing the amount of oxygen in your blood. This will also help with endurance.

2

Follow Qigong meditation practices. Meditation helps increase overall energy in the long term by reducing stress levels and giving your body a chance to rest.

3

Use strong, purposeful movements rather than sloppy, erratic ones. Build strong muscles. With them, you'll be well on your way to higher energy and better overall health.

4

Use a Qigong program specifically intended for increasing energy. Each different form of Qigong is meant to address specific health issues. To increase energy, the Daoyin form is often recommended.

5

Monitor your progress. Measuring increased energy is subjective. You'll need to spend additional time getting to know your body and learning to interpret the signals it gives you.

6

Use available teaching materials to help you set realistic goals to improve health and increase energy. Single classes are usually relatively inexpensive. Instructional books are another inexpensive way to learn about Qigong. Start by visiting the Web site of the National Qigong (Chi Kung) Association USA for basic information on Qigong and finding a Qigong teacher (see Resources below).

Tips & Warnings

Practice Qigong and give up on caffeine. After a Qigong session, many people report higher levels of alertness, focus and self esteem that last longer and are more intense than those associated with the stimulant caffeine.

Consult a doctor immediately if you experience severe anxiety, dizziness or shortness of breath during or after Qigong exercises.

How to Use Qigong to Improve Health

How to Use Qigong to Improve Health

The ancient Chinese practice of Qigong (pronounced "chee-gong") is a system that uses the body and the mind to heal itself. It's sometimes referred to as a holistic practice or a psychosomatic one. Basically, Qigong uses meditation, deep breathing techniques and sequential movement exercises to direct bodily energy to vital areas where it's said to heal damage, prevent illness and even cure disease. Qigong is practiced to increase longevity, reduce stress and improve overall health. Follow these steps to find out how.

Things You'll Need:

Comfortable clothing that allows for freedom of movement

Use Qigong to Reduce Stress

1

Close your eyes.

2

Clear your mind.

3

Breathe in deeply. Make sure you fill your lungs with air all the way down into your belly.

4

Exhale fully, using abdominal muscle contractions to completely expel the air from your lungs before you pull in another deep, healing breath.

5

Perform all movements slowly, but with strength and purpose.

6

Allow your mind to focus only on your body, your breath and your motion. Don't let your mind wander. Forget for a while everything that's happening in your life.

7

Notice how much better you can feel after only a single session. Proponents believe that Qigong breathing, meditation and exercises can reduce stress levels and tension that contribute to anxiety, depression and even heart disease.

8

Learn more about how to use Qigong to improve health by purchasing a book on the subject, like Ken Cohen's "The Way of Qigong" (see Resources below). You may also wish to find a Qigong teacher to help you learn proper technique. Visit the Web site of the National Qigong (Chi Kung) Association USA for more information (see Resources below).

Use Qigong to Manage Diabetes

1

Incorporate Qigong breathing and meditation into your life. The reduction in stress and anxiety that can follow can help those suffering from diabetes.

2

Practice a dynamic (incorporating physical movements/exercises) form of Qigong rather than a static one. Proper exercise is key to managing diabetes. Exercise regulates insulin levels in the blood.

3

Improve your health by making Qigong a lifestyle, rather than a task that you have to complete.

Tips & Warnings

Think about what you want to get out of Qigong. There are dozens, if not hundreds, of different Qigong forms. Each is intended for a different purpose. One form may be intended for stress reduction while another is meant to increase longevity. Yet another is meant to treat a specific disease or condition.

If you experience severe pain, dizziness or disorientation while performing Qigong, see your doctor or go to the hospital right away.

Keep your doctor informed about the alternative medical technique you undertake.

How to Use Proper Meditation Posture

How to Use Proper Meditation Posture

One thing nearly every different meditation discipline has in common, from Kabbalah meditation to ancient Zen techniques, is an emphasis on the use of proper posture. To experience meditation's calming, stress-reducing benefits, it must be practiced properly, and correct posture is a vital first step. Meditation, an ancient technique that focuses the mind, often leads to diminished anxiety and hypertension.

Things You'll Need:

Computer with Internet access

Dedicated quiet space for meditation

Small pillow or flat mat (optional)

Know the Correct Posture for Meditation

1

Begin by seating yourself on the floor. Use a small pillow or mat beneath your backside for an added degree of comfort.

2

Keep your back straight. This is absolutely essential to promoting the smooth and easy flow of energy throughout your body as you meditate.

3

Cross your legs. There are several acceptable variations for leg crossing, but the most common is to tuck the left food under the right thigh and let the right foot rest atop the left thigh. Knees should be touching the floor. Consult a diagram at the Kamalashila Web site if necessary (see Resources below).

4

Position your chin slightly downward, but not so low that you bend your neck. Your neck, like your back, should remain straight.

5

Let your eyes focus on nothing in particular. A common trick is to focus on the empty space approximately one foot in front of your nose.

6

Rest the tongue against the roof of your mouth, behind your upper teeth. This will delay your mouth's production of saliva, resulting in fewer distracting swallows.

7

Fold your hands, holding them a couple of inches below your belly button. Some meditation disciplines have specific hand-folding techniques. Consult a diagram if you need to.

8

Hold your lips apart, just slightly. Your teeth should not be closed. Breathe in and out through your nose, or in through your nose and out through your mouth.

9

Locate a center or meditation society in your town or city to learn a specific discipline, such as Transcendental Meditation. You can benefit from the expertise of others in learning proper posture.

Tips & Warnings

Costs involved with meditation accessories are generally affordable. Specially-designed cushions, for example, won't strain most budgets.

If you experience a sudden, sharp onset of anxiety, panic attacks or depression, you may be suffering from a stress-related disorder and should seek a qualified doctor as soon as possible. Never use meditation as a substitute for primary doctoral care.

How to Use Ozone Therapy to Boost Immune Systems

How to Use Ozone Therapy to Boost Immune Systems

Ozone therapy is a relatively new alternative health practice that purportedly uses oxygen, ozone or hydrogen peroxide to kill disease microorganisms, boost immune systems and improve cellular function. Proponents of this practice believe that the therapy helps satisfy and increase the body's antioxidant needs while cleansing and rejuvenating the blood and other fluids. Patients suffering from cancer, diabetes, chronic fatigue, pneumonia or influenza say they have experienced improvements thanks to ozone therapy.

Things You'll Need:

A trusted ozone therapy practitioner

Internet access

Use Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBO) to Boost Immune Systems

1

Locate a reputable ozone therapy practitioner via the Web or visit a trusted referral who has a hyperbaric oxygen chamber.

2

Enter the chamber and lie on your back.

3

Stay inside the chamber for no more than 90 minutes, breathing pure oxygen. This may also be administered through a tight-fitting mask.

Use Ozone Therapy to Boost Immune Systems

1

Access an ozone therapy practitioner.

2

Inquire about "autohemotherapy," a process by which blood is removed, treated with oxygen and ozone and returned to the body. This unusual treatment may very positively impact your immune system.

3

Request specific "ozone bagging" treatments. This process is also thought to assist the immune system by taking an airtight bag filled with ozone and oxygen and surrounding an area of the body, which then absorbs the mixture.

4

Aid stomach function through rectal insufflation. This process introduces oxygen and ozone through the rectum. They purportedly enter the intestines and are absorbed immediately, aiding digestion and boosting blood flow and immunity.

5

Use the Internet to learn more about ozone therapy. Visit the Oxygen Healing Therapies Web site to begin your research (see Resources below).

Tips & Warnings

Using ozone therapy to boost immune systems can incur high costs. Consultations are often free, but treatments can be very expensive, depending on frequency.

Serious, persistent disorders such as diabetes, cancer and severe pain should be treated by a doctor before proceeding with ozone therapy. Visit an ER or doctor immediately if your pain is acute.

Most ozone therapies used for boosting immune systems are safe for
children
, but consult your child's physician before proceeding.

3

Find a designer you like. You may find a few designers that catch your eye or fall in love with one particular designer's dresses. Either way, write down the designers you like and keep this list for your designer prom dress shopping. This will help you save time when you go to try on dresses as you can ask for designers by name that you already know you like.

Step
4

Find your dresses. If you plan on shopping in stores for your designer prom dress it will save you time to find out which stores carry the designers you like. Call ahead of time and ask which designer dresses each store stocks. If they don't stock any that were on your list you can skip them or put them at the bottom of the list if you still haven't found your perfect dress.

Step
5

Go shopping. Once you narrow down which stores carry the designer prom dresses you want go and try them on. There's no substitute for being able to see yourself in the dress before you buy so try on many dresses until you find the perfect one.

Step
6

Shop online. If you can't get to a store that stocks designer prom dresses there's always the internet. With online stores that offer an array of prom dresses you're sure to find a dress that you love. Just be sure you know exactly what size and color you want so you can order a flattering dress.

Tips & Warnings

Need inspiration for finding a designer prom dress style? Look to awards shows and what the celebrities are wearing. You'll find many great dresses to give you ideas on the red carpet.

When ordering a prom dress from the internet remember to order early and check the company's return policy. Since you can't try on the dress before you buy it you'll need to make sure they'll take the dress back if it doesn't fit. You also have to leave enough time to return the dress and order a new one before the big day.

How to Find a Deal on Handbags

How to Find a Deal on Handbags

A trendy, chic handbag is an accessory that many fashion-savvy women want in their wardrobes. Having a handbag to match every outfit is ideal. However, finding a deal on handbags can pose a challenge.

Step
1

Decide if you want to find specific handbags to match a particular pair shoes or an outfit, or versatile handbags that look good with everything you wear.

Step
2

Decide if wearing original bags or knock-off bags is an issue for you. Many times, people prefer wearing original name brand handbags rather than knock-off bags. Since there are often little differences in the two, buying a knock-off designer bag can save you money.

Step
3

Shop at high-end consignment shops for great deals on handbags. There are secret treasures to be found at these consignment shops. Handbags that are typically high-priced in department stores can be found for half or even three-quarters less than they are brand new.

Step
4

Go to garage sales and yard sales to find discarded, gently-used designer bags.

Step
5

Shop online at websites that offer discounts on designer handbags like designerhandbagsonsale.com. Websites like this will show top-quality discount bags, or will point you to retailers that offer discounts.

How to Find a Clothing Style That Works

How to Find a Clothing Style That Works

Each season the catwalks and magazines fill with the latest trends in fashion. Much of it is interesting and desirable, but how much of it actually looks good on the average man or woman? Don't be an inadvertent style victim. If you want a wardrobe that is stylish, but suits your personality and shape, give these steps a try.

Step
1

Look at your naked body in the mirror from different directions.

Step
2

Make a list of all the things you like about your body. Do you have great legs? A nice bum? List everything.

Step
3

Try to draw your shape on a piece of paper or ask a friend to help. Draw as accurate a shape as possible so you can find the right cuts for you.

Step
4

Think about your color and pattern preferences. Do you like black, or go for bold colors? Do you enjoy texture and pattern? Write these down.

Step
5

Find out what cuts suit your shape best. A-line skirts do wonders for a heavy lower half, while V-necks break up the heaviness of a large bust. Put emphasis on the parts of your body that you like most.

Step
6

Bring your notebook as you shop for new clothes. Make sure that each item you consider fits the guidelines you've set out in your notebook.

Tips & Warnings

Be creative and look for combinations that reflect your personality.

Always try clothes on before buying. Never buy off the rack without seeing how the item looks on your body.

Don't be afraid of tailoring. Few items we buy in a store will fit our shapes perfectly.

Invest in staple items for your wardrobe that will not go out of style. Choose items that you can mix and match with in-season items for variety.

How to Find a Classic Prom Dress

How to Find a Classic Prom Dress

Going to the prom is a special event and one that you will always remember. Are you wondering what to wear? Do you want to stand out and be noticed? Wear a classic prom dress.

Step
1

Go to Goodwill or
Salvation
Army

. There you can find classic prom dresses or dresses of any style that you can wear to the prom. The cool thing about stores like these is that you will pay a fraction of the cost for these classic prom dresses than if you were to go to a boutique.

Step
2

Check out what consignment shops have to offer. There you may be able to find classic prom dresses. You will also be able to find dresses that are from many eras here as well--generally more so than at Goodwill or Salvation Army.

Step
3

Explore stores that sell vintage clothing. Stores like these specialize in clothing from many eras and clothes from the modern era are in the minority. You should be able to find a wonderful classic prom dress there.

Step
4

Search online. Retailers like Rosetti make gowns that are based on period clothing. If you can afford it, this would be a great source for classic prom gowns.

Step
5

Visit your local fabric store. Find patterns for classic prom dresses or dresses that can be worn to the prom, and make your own. Your gown will not only be made just for you, but one-of-a-kind. If you can't sew, hire someone to make the dress for you.

Step
6

Experience the thrill of making your own classic dress from scratch by making your own patterns as well as the gown. Explore costume history books or sites, read Janet Arnold and have fun. You will make not only a classic prom dress, but also something that can be passed down from generation to generation.

How to Find a Bra for Post-Baby Breasts

How to Find a Bra for Post-Baby Breasts

Any woman who's ventured into a Victoria's Secret post-partum (and post-nursing) knows the pain: suddenly your breasts have shifted. Top volume has been lost, bottom volume has increased, and the fitter thinks you're crazy for wanting a bigger cup size. Fear not. Try out these tips, and soon you'll look forward to lingerie shopping again.

Things You'll Need:

Tape measure

Courage

Variety of bras for fitting

Step
1

Find your bra size. Maddeningly, this is only an estimate, worse even than finding a jeans size. Stick the tape measure under your armpits and draw it across the very top of your chest. If it's odd, add 1"; that's your band size. If it's even, that's your band size.

Step
2

Figure out your cup size. Put on your best fitting (not terribly padded) bra and put the tape measure around the middle of your chest over the cups. Why wear a bra for this? If you're like most moms, gravity and childbirth has, um, lowered your center (and if it hasn't, why are you reading this?). Wearing a bra will give you a better sizing. Subtract the band size number from that number; if the difference is 1", your cup size is A. 2" is B, 3" C, 4" D, and so on.

Step
3

Find a bunch of bras that you like. Demi-bras and push-up bras often work nicely for post-partum chests. Because the demi-bra only holds the bottom half, it creates volume up on top. There are even full-coverage push-ups these days. Underwires have the best support. Regular bras are often loose in the upper cup after a baby. Get a selection, and don't forget to get a variety of sizes, because manufacturers vary. So if one 36D looks a little small in the cup, go ahead and try the DD. If it looks too big, try a size down. Nobody knows except you.

Step
4

Determine if the bra fits well. Nothing should gape; the band should sit straight across your back and front. If the band is going up in the back, go up a band size. A well-fitting bra should fit on the loosest hook; the band will stretch. The bra cups should not be cutting into your flesh, nor should there be any side-spillage-- go up a cup size if this is happening. Don't forget the breast tissue in the armpits; sometimes underwires cut in there.

Step
5

If there is loose material at the top of the breast but it fits fine at the bottom of your breast, try a different style rather than size. Remember, breasts come in all shapes and sizes, and not all bras can accommodate your uniqueness.

Step
6

Your nipple should be about halfway between your shoulder and your elbow. Adjust the straps to see if this bra will make that happen. If not, move on. Larger breasts often need wider straps for more support.

Step
7

Assess and reassess. Is the fabric comfy? Does it offer enough coverage? Are there seams in weird, itchy places? Put a shirt on over it; if you mainly wear T-shirts, will this bra be smooth enough?

Tips & Warnings

Buy at least three bras: one to wear, one to wash, and one on reserve.

If you lose or gain a few pounds, resize.

Buy the prettiest bra you can. It's a mood lifter even when you're picking up Cheerio crumbs.

If you're self-conscious about losing volume after your baby, try a gel bra. They look (and feel) great.

Don't settle! Never buy a bra just because it was on sale, or because it kind of fit, but you think it's really ugly. You'll never wear it anyway if you don't like it.

Tell the fitter to take a hike. Most fitters don't take the whole volume/shifting thing into consideration. If you find a fitter that does, tell them to wear a special badge so the rest of us can find them.

How to Find a Bra for Overweight Small-Breasted Women

How to Find a Bra for Overweight Small-Breasted Women

This is a way to buy a bra at the same price as the women with less to love. Just because we are bigger than the average model doesn't mean we cant shop at a normal business place. You can actually make those bras from walmart and target fit this project is for both the smaller breasted women and larger breasted women alike and works on all back hook style bras.

Things You'll Need:

1 bra from the store that is your cup size and largest in band size

one or two of your old bras

scissors

needle and thread

15 to 20 minutes of time to spend on this project

Step
1

Start off by going bra shopping for the bar that fits your cup size. Make sure you get the largest size possible in band size. For now it does not matter if the band size fits just the cup size. You can buy any style you like that hooks in the back for this project.

Step
2

When you get it home match the number of hooks to an old bra you do not wear any longer and remove the hooks and eyes from the old bra (if you need more than a couple of inches in extension you can do this on two or more bras)make sure to cut through the threading so that both sides are open making it easier to sew them together.

Step
3

match the edges of the pieces with the hooks facing down and eyes side facing up laying them as if they were one piece and sew the top layer of both together flipping it over to continue around to the back and sewing that top layer together go around it until you can pull on it and it is sound enough to be used as an extension for your new bra. be sure to make sure the stiches are whipped stitches and close together to make it sound enough to be put through alot of wear and tear.

Step
4

Hook on one extension to the new bra and try this out as if it were all one piece if this is comfortable then you are all set. If it is still a bit tight try another extension and this should make it better. This is a way to recycle parts of old bras you do not wear any longer and to wear the nice bras you'd love to wear. It also saves a lot of money.

Tips & Warnings

If you aren't that savvy a sewer some Wal-Marts sell bra extensions or you can go on eBay and find some or find someone to help you figure out how to sew them together so you can do them yourself at a future
date
.

If you have any other questions or need help looking i will happily do this for you just send me a message. Us bigger gals gotta stick together!!

It is imperative that you sew the hooks facing down and eyes facing up so that they will hook correctly to the eyes of the new bra and the eyes will face out making it easy to hook the new bras hooks to the eyes of the extension!!

How to Fill Out a Male to Female Transgender's Bra

How to Fill Out a Male to Female Transgender's Bra

I've seen male to female transgenders try filling their bras with just about everything to create the illusion of breasts: water balloons, ziplock bags full of sand, and rubber gloves stuffed with
petroleum
jelly

. While those ended up as messy disasters, these tips will help a transwoman in creating a more realistic (and less accident-prone) illusion of natural breasts.

Step
1

One of the best places to find artificial breasts is among the breast augmentation aides that women already use to make their busts look bigger. Padded bras are a good start; they already have the proper shape and something solid in there to start to fill you out.

Step
2

Many swear by falsies: plastic or silicone breastforms. They're just small shaped inserts that you can slide into your bra, molded to mimic the natural contour and texture of a breast.

Step
3

If you aren't comfortable shopping for those items in department stores, you can always look them up online. Many online retailers carry them, allowing you to have them delivered to your front door to maintain your privacy. Just make sure to take your measurements properly for any undergarments so you won't have to return anything.

Step
4

If you go the homemade route, avoid using anything heavy. You'll need more support and will likely end up with something misshapen and lopsided. No socks, either, or anything balled-up. You'll have lumps. And please, please, for your own sake, don't use anything involving liquid or gel. Especially not anything involving liquid or gel in something that can be punctured.

Step
5

Padding your bra is generally only a first step to see how you feel about feminizing. Many often take the next step and begin taking estrogen; estrogen stimulates the biologically male body and causes it to begin to grow breasts. The size of your breasts will depend on how long you've been taking estrogen, how your body responds to it, and genetic predispositions that run in your family. Look at the female members of your family and the average size of your endowments; while it's doubtful you'll reach their sizes, it will give you an estimate of the farthest range of expected growth.

Step
6

Both male to females who've taken estrogen and those who haven't often choose to have implants as the final step to permanent breasts. Some don't want to take hormones, or find that hormones don't quite cause the growth they want. Consult your regular physician regarding the options that are safest for you.

Step
7

No matter how you choose to augment your torso, take your body type, height, and weight into account when filling out your chest. Before you do anything permanent, experiment with falsies of different sizes to find out what looks best on your body.

How to Fill Out a Bathing Suit

How to Fill Out a Bathing Suit

Everyone wants to look good when they wear a bathing suit during the summer. However, you may have issues with your body that you want to work on before you put on a swimsuit again. There are some things that you can do in order to fill out a bathing suit nicely.

Step
1

Get a bathing suit with cups built in. Cups can support your breasts while also adding some padding to the area. Bathing suits with cups can make you look an entire cup size larger.

Step
2

Exercise before the summer season. Fill out a bathing suit by working on your body before the summer season starts. Perform targeted exercises like leg lifts and arm curls.

Step
3

Buy a swimsuit that flatters your figure. Certain bathing suits are going to look better than others. For example, if you have very small breasts, then steer away from low suits that look better on bustier women.

Step
4

Look into a bathing suit that accentuates your breasts. If you have problem areas, but a nice chest, then bring attention to that area with a push up bra bathing suit. Wonderbra and Victoria's Secret both make this type of suit.

Step
5

Hide flaws with cover ups. Although you may have found a suit that fits you nicely, you may want to use a cover up to help you feel more comfortable. A sarong can help a girl that is unhappy with her thighs or legs.

Tips & Warnings

Even if you have a small chest, you can fill out a bathing suit nicely. Simply buy a suit that draws attention to your legs or abs.

You can look into a body shaper bathing suit as well. These suits are made out of a material that can help manage the body's problem areas.
